Professor of Agricultural
Economics at Texas A&M University with joint appointment (25%) in Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Sciences (RPTS),
Research Fellow, Hazard Reduction and Recovery Center
Received B.A. in Geography
at the University of Colorado (1977) and Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Colorado (1986).
My recent research efforts have largely involved policy analysis
mainly focusing on ties between risk and uncertainty and the environment or health. I also do non-market valuation,
linking microeconomic theory to applied econometrics to actually be able to estimate values individuals have for health risk reductions and resource changes.
Research projects have included a national study of arsenic in drinking water, funded via the STAR
grant program for the U.S. EPA (2005-2007), and an exploratory study of hurricane risks, funded by the National Science Foundation (2006-2007).
Some new papers on arsenic in drinking water and hurricane risks can be found at Papers page (click at left).
I typically teach one undergraduate course in environmental and resource economics. I also teach
a graduate "frontiers" course
in environmental and resource economics
and another graduate course for RPTS in the economics of recreation.
Special Focus: Water resource economics,
Risk and Uncertainty, Non-market Valuation.
Current Responsibilities: Graduate Student Recruitment Coordinator, Environmental and Natural Resources Working Group, Texas A&M
